I’ve reached a point in my life where I can pretty confidently estimate that over half the people I know have done some form of freelance or contracting work in the past five years.

It’s far from an abnormality these days, and frankly, the world is starting to wake up to the fact that employees hold far greater value than many companies give them credit for. Businesses that don’t recognize this are likely to get left in the dust within the next decade.

But people who jump into freelancing without first doing their research can easily be taken advantage of in a competitive market. There are steps gig workers can take to protect themselves and their income, but those are steps only the worker is responsible for managing. The client’s interest is not in fair pay, but in getting the best deal.

So how does a freelancer handle this?

The number one difference
