My Pandemic Wedding

And all the good it has done so far for my marriage

We always knew we would have a quick engagement. It took a great deal of convincing for me to even seriously consider getting married at all, and once I got there, I knew right away I wasn’t interested in staying a fiancé for longer than I had to.

The wedding ceremony itself was never going to be a major production.

Extensive families on both sides and a vast network of friends necessitated some manner of gathering, but we were always happy to let that come later and keep the ceremony small. COVID, of course, ensured that we had no trouble at all sticking to those plans. I’ll be very honest: as difficult and scary and stressful as a global health crisis was, it was an awfully good excuse to just do what we wanted anyway without the bother of explaining too much why we didn’t invite anyone.

So away we went one weekend in October 2020 to meet up with an officiant and a photographer. After a quick chat in the parking lot, we walked a few meters into the woods and got hitched under some trees. We took lots of beautiful pictures, had a (fake) champagne toast out of a picnic basket, and then went out for barbecue.
